How to Reach Ajmer

Ajmer exists on the banks of the holy Ana Sagar Lake, a placid waterbody that really adds to Ajmer’s charm. This Muslim pilgrimage town is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills making it all the more picturesque in the winter months. Jaipur is just 130kms away and the secular traveller will find a number of attractions to explore in Ajmer.

The dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti and the glorious Jain temples should be at the top of your list of places to explore in Ajmer. The town is steeped in Mughal and colonial history. Yes, this is a town full of devotees but it is also an interesting place to visit from a traveller’s perspective.

If you’re scratching your head and wondering how to reach Ajmer, here’s all the info you need.

1.By Air:

The closest airport is the Jaipur International Airport with flights from all major cities in India and abroad. From here, a 2 hour 30 minute car ride will see you land up in the beautiful town of Ajmer.

If you’re flying from Delhi to Jaipur, the duration is a little above an hour. For those on a short trip to Ajmer, this is your best option. Ajmer is well connected to Jaipur and hiring a car or booking a seat on a bus from Jaipur will not be troublesome.

2.By Rail:

In the heart of the city lies the Ajmer Junction Railway Station. This railway station is well connected with a number of cities within and outside Rajasthan. You can reserve a seat on a Super-Fast, Mail or Express train and your journey will certainly be a memorable one.

All the major Ajmer attractions like the dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, Soniji ki Nasiyan and Foy Sagar Lake are a stone’s throw away from Ajmer Junction. This allows you to explore the town within a few hours, if you don’t have too much time to kill here.

Ajmer has a well-oiled bus transit system in place. Whether you’re travelling from Jaipur, Delhi, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner or Jaisalmer, you can easily reserve a seat on an AC deluxe carrier or non-AC bus. There are private agencies as well as state-run buses plying between major Rajasthani cities and Ajmer.

The Ajmer Bus Stand is a 5 minute auto-rickshaw ride away from the train station.
